Defect

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ford Edge and 2017 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. On vehicles with 2.0L gas engines and six-speed automatic transmissions, the torque converter weld studs may have been inadequately welded.

Consequence

If the torque converter weld studs fail, the torque converter will not be connected to the engine flexplate and the vehicle will lose the ability to move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Action

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque converters, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S16 (S2). Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 17V-427.

Frequently Asked Questions

2 common questions answered

2018 Ford Edge Recall InformationAccording to NHTSA recall information, the 2018 Ford Edge has four recalls. The affected components are the transmission, alternator, door latch, and brake system. Recall status is specific to each vehicle, so a VIN check is the best way to determine whether an open recall remains on your Edge.
Transmission Recall

Some 2017–2018 Ford Edge vehicles with a 2.0L gas engine and six-speed automatic transmission may have torque converter weld studs that were not welded properly. If the studs fail, the torque converter may disconnect from the engine flexplate, causing the vehicle to lose the ability to move and increasing crash risk. Ford’s remedy is replacement of the torque converter by a dealer at no charge.

Alternator Recall

The power supply cables at the starter and alternator may not be properly secured. This condition can allow an electrical arc to form, increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers inspect the starter and alternator power supply cables and correct them as necessary at no charge under the manufacturer recall remedy.

Door Latch Recall

Some 2018 Ford Edge vehicles may have door striker bolts that are shorter than intended. The affected door hardware may not meet federal door-lock and door-retention requirements, and a door could open during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Ford’s remedy is replacement of the door striker bolts at no charge through an authorized dealer.

Brake Recall

The front brake hoses may rupture prematurely, allowing brake fluid to leak. A ruptured hose can increase the distance needed to stop and raise crash risk. Ford’s remedy is replacement of the front brake hoses with hoses using revised braid material at no charge. If you notice a safety concern, arrange service promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

Safety Comes First

NHTSA recall information identifies four affected areas: the transmission, alternator, door latch, and brake system. A torque converter problem could prevent the vehicle from moving, while unsecured alternator or starter cables could create an electrical arc and fire risk. Short door striker bolts could allow a door to open during a crash, and a ruptured front brake hose could leak fluid and lengthen stopping distance. Waiting can leave a known safety concern unresolved. A prompt VIN check helps determine whether your Edge needs one of these manufacturer remedies, and recall repairs are completed at no charge when applicable.
